No War, PLEASE!!!!!

My last post was quite long.
I tend to go on & on when it comes to plants & my ideas for landscaping (among a host of other topics). The job I loved the best of all I have done was working for a nursery back in Texas. I would have loved to have the position of landscape artist, but that was left to the men there. *Sigh* As an artist, I know I could do a great job landscaping, with the money, tools & labor to back me up, as well as the plants.
One of the things I left off was some things I learned about the doctor I'm seeing again at Tripler. He has an award on his office wall from one of the major medical universities. It was given to him in recognition of pediatric urological reconstruction. Seems he may have pioneered a few techniques in that area. His 'I Love Me' wall was covered with other awards as well.
I did some online research about the procedure he wants to do, as well as looking him up. I found 2 things authored by him. One was a research project he was involved in, regarding testicular cancer. Another was an article he wrote about fractured foleys (the end of catheters).
I don't remember how much I wrote about a neighbor of mine, who royally pissed me off at the time I was so ill & going through surgeries for my cancer. He threatened back then to shut off the spigot at the community center, which is the only source of drinking water for many of us in this subdivision for about 10 miles. I told him he couldn't do that, since we all pay association dues to cover those expenses until the county pipes in water. He thought he was god & could. I called the Environmental Health Office the next day & they assured me that I was right. His action to block that faucet was stopped.
He is of the Baha'i faith, supposedly Christian do-gooders. This man has to be one of the most selfish people & biggest liars I've personally known. As an example, when I worked for the subdivision, he promised to help the employees get paid what they deserved. I was making less than $6/hour as an Office Manager, while the board was paying a board member (as a temporary consultant, who was only supposed to be there 3 months, but was there for over 1.5 years!) $10/hour. This woman knew very little about DOS computer systems, & yet was supposed to square away the data on a system that didn't run Windows at all. She hired me because I DO know DOS. But she managed to continually interrupt my work, dragging me off onto other projects & continually running her mouth. Her computer expertise was limited to punch card computer programming of the 1950s & Win95 (barely). Anyway, she was the reason I walked out on that job, after my doc insisted that the job was way to stressful for me. I'm a fixit. I found that they weren't providing the employees with law-granted benefits, so made an enemy of myself by getting them what they were entitled to. She was a no-nothing, whose best talent was getting others to do the work for her, while she took the credit & the money.
After I left, they hired the then board president's daughter, at $12/hour! They eventually fired nearly everyone I had worked with, accusing them of doing things they really weren't (except for that woman & the First-to-Work flunky she brought in, who was a virtual slave to her). They ended up contracting with a temp agency, because of the health care costs for the employees (which was what was being denied to all but the full-time employees... me & the maintenance supervisor, when state law mandates it for those working 20+ hours/week). What they had to pay for each of these employees through the temp agency was almost twice what they had paid us. How was that saving money? It didn't, since I was the bookkeeper until I left, & knew what our running expenses were.
Back to my neighbor... the promised pay raises never came. He personally fired most of the others after I left. (By the way, I drew disability compensation through their insurance because of the working environment, until I went to work, temporarily, for the 2000 Census, which didn't last but 3.5 weeks for me! I could have refiled for it after my job with the Census ended, but didn't bother. I also could have drawn unemployment, but only if I COULD work a full-time job, which the doc didn't recommend.) At the time he told me he was going to shut off that spigott, I told him he was NO Christian, & to go to hell! I also mentioned 'What if it was YOU or one of YOUR FAMILY who had cancer & needed a place to shower for surgery (I learned he had the water heater shut off in the bathhouse at the community center & I was going for surgery the next day & just ran out of porpane, with no money to buy more, or transportation to get it!)? He's also on catchment. If his pump broke down, or his water heater quit, do you think he wouldn't take what he needed from the community center, even when he denied it to others? HAH!!! He has a supposedly great filtration system on his water catchment, yet I catch him filling drinking water from that same faucet he wanted to shut down! Does he limit himself to 5 gallons at a time, as is mandated by the sign next to the faucet? NO!!!! The rules he imposes do not apply to him & his.
So guess what I learned a few months back? I thought that his wife, having been raised in Hawaii & possibly exposed to the same government bio/chemical testing they did here as I was, might turn up with cancer. Nope. HE DID!!! He was diagnosed with prostate cancer, & had the cancer surgically removed only last month. I saw him recently at the community center & thought to ask if my urologist doc is the one who helped him. Yep. Same doc. He told me that the doc is very good. I asked if he was going through chemo or radiation, & he said no, that the doc said he got it all & there's no need for those treatments. Maybe this doc has gotten smart to the devastating & almost worthless effects of chemo & radiation for cancer patients, like what research I've found, where they make the stuff look as though it works by the way they word their findings & manipulate the numbers. Those treatments work in less than 25% of the cases in actual fact!!! Those treated with them often have a recurrance of the same cancer in another part of the body (ie: breast cancer tumors in the lungs, neck or head), or another form of unrelated cancer... over 70%, within 5 years!!! Within 10 years, the numbers of those with some cancer return jump to about 85%, with nearly 100% within 15 years.
I have met ONE woman who has lived longer after a double radical mastectomy back in the 60s. I have to wonder if her eating habits had changed since the initial diagnosis (most cancer prevention can be linked to what you eat), or that she was misdiagnosed (it still happens today, with all the checks in place to prevent that from happening). Whatever the case is with her, she's in her 70s & loving life! God bless her!
In the case of my neighbor & my argument with him, was I predicting what he would be dealing with? Was I spiritually 'seeing' his cancer even then? Or was it that I was cursing him with it? I hope & pray not the latter, since I don't want to wish this disease on ANYONE! I was just very angry at the time... & did say some things I would not, under most circumstances. I'm not usually confrontational, most of the time biting my tongue, until I have the facts in front of me to back my argument, which even then, I've had people dispute, like the Hawaii State Employment laws on healthcare benefits (intentionally? misinterpreted to back her postion).
He's also a Navy Veteran, like me. Some commaraderie, huh? But, being the person I am, I have given him the herbal remedies information, in general, to help him with his cancer, asking nothing in return. That's me... I want to HELP others! -
Now, for something less 'in your face'; (yes, Mitch, I know the difference, & what I have posted in the past has been far from that, until the last few posts, in which I am am trying to get people to wake up from their apathy about the impending war with Iraq... & alot of the rest of the world, if Bush has his way!).
I went to Tripler February 28, to the urology clinic. I have had a bladder-control problem (comes & goes) for MANY years. The doctor (a Lieutenant Colonel) wants me to come back for 2 tests in April (he wanted sooner, but is booked until then), one of which is invasive, from my Internet research. I am beginning to think that the problem I have had 'forever' may be a congenital anomaly, like my fused L5/sacrum. My bladder control issues don't fit standard questionnaires designed for adult bladder-control issues.
Thinking back on one teenage doctor visit, I have to think congenital problem is the culprit. That doc decided that my urethra was too small, so inserted (with my mom watching) a huge (my opinion) metal catheter, to stretch my urethra. This really didn't fix my problem at the time & has left me with emotional scars to this day, that I have not talked about. I couldn't even tell the doc I just saw.
I've been taking my son to the farmers market every Sunday, after which I drop him in town to skateboard. While at the market, I usually enjoy browsing the vendors' stalls & chatting with a few people there. Lately, I've been scoring on buying orchids, at cheap prices. I even bought a few dendrobium orchids that I had been hoping to buy forever! They were $4.50 each. I bought 4, much to my son's chagrin.
These orchids are very prolific & very sweet-smelling as well as gorgeous! I've also bought a few small variety catalayas, non-fragrant dendrobiums, an epi & oncidiums at different times.
That Friday, after returning to Hilo from my consult at Tripler, I stopped at the Nurserymen's Association plant sale. I found a beautiful catalaya there, which I splurged by paying $20 for! It's a double-lipped purple, with a yellow to white band in the throat & mostly a rich purple on the lip. The next morning, I sniffed it (I did at the plant sale, but that was nighttime, so no smell). It has a light, sweet smell! Perfect!!!! I'd post a pic of it if I had the digital camera that the VA has promised to get for me.
The fragrant dendrobiums I bought at the market sell for $14.97 in the local Wal-Mart. They are available online for $29.99 +. I have paid $1 - 4.50 for the non-fragrant ones, which sell for $8.97 in Wal-Mart. The small catalayas sell for $14.97 in Wal-Mart, which I have bought on occasion.
I have a small variety catalaya I bought early last month at W-M that has dropped 2 flowers already, has 5 blossoms recently opened & several more buds & flower stalks shooting up. This one is a fragrant, pale yellow with maroon-edged lip & dark yellow throat. The outer petals have pale purple tips & streaks. When I saw this one in W-M, smelled it, & noticed that it would be producing lots more blossoms over time, I could NOT pass it up!
My house & yard would be filled with orchids if I could afford to do that! Especially with the fragrant ones.
Yesterday, I meant to put together a wrought-iron, wood slat park bench I bought long ago. When I started pulling the lush vegetation in the area I want it, I found holes.
The area I live is full of lava tubes & 'lava trees.' This means that there are LOTS of holes in the ground. This has its advantages & disadvantages. One thing that can go either way is the fact that water doesn't stay on top of the ground. In fact, the translation of the Hawaiian name for my subdivision & the nearby forest is 'Vanishing Waters.' As much as it rains in this area (250"+/year), this is definitely a plus, since flooding isn't a problem. However, for those of us who love rivers, streams, creeks, rivulets, ponds & lakes, this means we're out of luck unless we create our own, which many do.
In the 'tropical garden' as I call the place I want the bench, I want to create my own little stream with ponds & waterfalls. Where the holes I found yesterday are located, I am enlarging to accommodate this plan. It is near the start of my stream, near my catchment tank, the overflow of which will be my primary water source. This holes area will be my first pond. There is a natural path beside it & a more solid area on the other side of the path, which I will create a natural bridge to get to, using the large lava rocks that I am removing from there & other areas. The only unnatural things I will be using for my project will be the old carpet for the bottom, some kind of plastic liner (like an old waterbed mattress or two) atop that to keep the water from disappearing underground, the pump to return the water to the top of the stream, the electricity to the pump & the piping to get it back uphill (most likely CPVC, which is safe for hot & drinking water).
I have also been finding alot of rich black soil, from decomposed plant material. I am removing this from my holes & will use it for my plantings. Along with the soil there is red cinder-soil that the former owner wasted money on in his attempt to make the ground more solid. I say wasted because this stuff washes away very easily with rain. The only reason there still is any in my yard is because of the loam that has clogged the smaller holes in the rocks.
My stream will run almost the length of my property. Where I plan for it to end, there will be another pond, at the base of a sheared large rock... sort of a cliff, about 8 feet high. This will be my waterfalls. At the base of that rock is a small but somewhat deep hole (about 3' nearest to the shear rock, compared with the level around it), which will be the lower pond. I may widen the area some to make the pond bigger, depending upon the rock formations there.
I removed alot of diphenbachia... HUGE ones, along with a bunch of irises which are white with purple centers & fragrant, as well as lots of impatiens. Some of this I will replant, once I get my layout done. The unused of these plants I may either sell or give away. It's not like I don't have alot of them left elsewhere. My yard is full of them.
I have lots of other plants I plan to landscape around my rivulet & ponds. Some are plants I've bought while others I have collected wild, in my yard, or from others' yards (with their permission, of course
). This is a project I had in mind when I first moved in. It's just procrastination that has interfered with my starting on it before now. That & the horrendous amount of vines, weeds, & brush & tree-trimming that I've been doing in bits & pieces over the nearly 6 years of living here. Unfortunately, it's hard to get ahead of jungle growth!
Once I get my camera, I'll post pics of my work. The buck keeps getting passed about who is responsible to initiate the order for it, as well as the software I requested (graphics stuff & Word Perfect pro), a new printer/scanner/copier, etc.
As much as this has been delayed (over 3 years now), more complications have been instated, causing further delays. The VA just made some changes requiring everything purchased for the Vets to be validated, even if it only costs $10. The latest monkeywrench is that we have a new counselor for this island, for the other side of the island, who's helping the guy for this side. Of course, he's required to go through training & having to make himself familiar with the Veterans needs. I just learned today that the original counselor for this island got married in Taiwan recently (one of his many vacations since taking this job) & will soon be moving there. The VA is supposed to hire another to replace him. But this means more delay as another person has to familiarize him/herself with the clients' needs & complete the VA training! ARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! -

Apathy is my only excuse for not posting. The thought of us going into war is extremely depressing. I'm positive our politicians have NO idea what the whole world, much less the US would face in the type of war that Shrub is proposing. For example, as I've mentioned before, the long-term effects of using nuclear weapons! The link above is to a recent (last night) story about our neighbors from Bikini Atoll of the Marshall Islands, who STILL CANNOT GO HOME because of OUR nuke test run nearly 60 years ago!
You who think it would be ok to nuke the Middle East have NO idea what you are talking about! If we were to receive oil from that area after a nuclear detonation, we would be spreading nuclear contamination wherever that oil goes. In other words, any commodity (which Shrub so badly wants control of) would be too contaminated to utilize. So that oil would be no good.
Guess what? WE have more crude in known reservoirs in the US than the Middle East (100 BILLIN barrels more!)! Most is untapped. But of that which HAD been at one point, the oil industry has capped, without explanation. Now, they are saying it would cost too much to refit those wells to current tech standards for financial feasibility. BULLSHIT!!!!!! They just don't want to pay royalties on the stuff!
If any of you knowledgeable of the oil industry of the 80s would check into this, you would find that horizontal drilling started up just about the time many of these wells were capped off. There were suits in regard to stealing mineral rights (guess where?... TEXAS!!!) due to the horizontal drilling. However, property owners, without the clout of the oil companies, lost out on the suits. Horizontal drilling is still practiced in South Central Texas today, extracting that same oil reserves they claim they have NO ACCESS to!
I have told a few people about some of my personal experiences with the oil industry, but they continue to believe the BS passed on by corporate CEOs, who's primary goal is PROFIT. I spoke to an oil tanker truck driver at the time, who had hauled THOUSANDS of gallons of refined diesel into the desert, pumping it into the ground. Apparently, with the price increase of gasoline (due to an unexplained shortage), people began to buy diesel-powered vehicles (mostly Mercedez & Volkswagon Rabbits, taking money out of corporate America's pockets again). This caused there to be less gasoline sales because those still driving gasoline-powered vehicles cut their driving habits to only necessary trips. Diesel-powered vehicles can go up to 4+ times farther per gallon than gasoline-powered engines. It only made sense to drive a diesel engine. They also DON'T have to meet emissions requirements imposed upon gasoline-powered engines.
Anyway, back to the oil tanker fiasco... The price of diesel at the time was about 1/3rd the cost of gasoline, so the oil companies were 'losing money' (profits). The diesel shortage that turned up then was CREATED, so that the oil companies could still enjoy the exceptionally high profit margin they wanted.
I remember buying PREMIUM gasoline for my 1968 Firebird convertible in 1974 for 35¢/gallon. After the supposed gasoline shortage (early 80s), the price of regular jumped to $1.009/gallon. (This was in Texas.) Diesel in the mid-70s was about 25¢/gallon. As a result of the 'diesel shortage,' that price jumped to $1.25/gallon (from about 40¢).
Does anyone have any idea how much money a gas station makes from the sales of gasoline? I do, since I managed one in Texas. As a manager, I received 5¢/per gallon sold. Off quarts of oil, I made 4¢. (I made more profit off sodas & snacks!) I'm sure the oil company I worked for made a hell of alot more than that. This was when fuel price averaged about 90¢/gallon & 10¢ went to State & Federal road taxes.
I have mentioned some of this stuff before, mostly in person to close 'friends.' I wasn't believed then. "Dumb blonde female" attitude... I didn't know what I was talking about. I've got news for you... I HAVE FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE OF MOST OF WHAT I SAY! If not first-hand, then second-hand, by someone (as in the trucker) who actually saw/did what I mentioned. And I don't just 'spread gossip' when I mention something someone else has said. I've checked into it more. Example... I hate being wrong... in the position of passing on false information or mis-directing others. All I want to do is HELP!
And Dread, those numbers you look at are manipulated. Get 'down & dirty' with the REAL people involved with some of these issues. You might just change your tune. For example, I learned that a woman, pissed about how Jimmy Dean's corp was treating her, took off her metal mesh glove, threw it in the sausage grinder & walked out. The metal was packaged into breakfast sausage. The woman who worked next to her (& saw her do it) told me of the incident.
Piss off the wrong person & the next cup of coffee you get might just literally be full of it (piss, that is!)! I don't condone what these people do, but I understand WHY. If you think it's rare, you'd better wake up. Most who have jobs would rather play games or mess around on the Internet than do what they are paid to do, so that's just what happens. No wonder our country is so fucked-up! Look at how many even here on Xanga only browse Xanga WHILE ON THE JOB!!! SHAME ON YOU!!!! Do your fucking JOB FIRST!!!! And don't tell me that you don't have work to do! There's ALWAYS something needing to be done on the job, or there wouldn't be such a back-log of stuff! -
War with Iraq on Hold?
We are doing some good. With the numerous people standing in protest of an impending pre-emptive strike against Iraq & those of us mostly quietly adding our voices to this, the Administration is truly losing favor with the world & its own people. See this MSNBC online article, detailing the recent developments: http://www.msnbc.com/news/842500.asp?0bl=-0.
Here is an excerpt from that article:
"In exchange for Turkish help, the United States has offered Ankara an economic aid package that includes $6 billion in grants and U.S. government backing for up to $20 billion in loans that Ankara could secure through private banks." Turkey officials are holding out for $30 billion.
Think of how much benefit that $26 billion would have for our own citizens. Think of all the families with no homes anymore, thanks to the Welfare Reduction Act, living under overpasses, in abandoned homes, shelters, or in parks. Think of the many elderly & children with inadequate health care, as well as those with NONE! Think of our own food banks shelves, so poorly stocked that many get virtually nothing. Think of all those out of work, trying to find meager jobs, which often put them in further debt because of the financial cost of having a job (don't tell me there isn't, when you consider wardrobe, travel, childcare, phone, etc!). A minimum wage job barely covers the costs for a family of ONE, if that person lives with parents, etc, much less touch the expenses of more than one person.
Here's another thing to consider... that $26 billion is hardly a fraction of what the Administration is considering spending for the upcoming threatened war! Who will benefit from the spending of all this tax-payers' monies? Not I, nor the average US citizen, for sure. I can think of a million better ways to spend tax monies than those Shrub is proposing.
Someone recently mentioned that Saddam is accused of murdering children in his country. I find that especially hard to fathom, knowing that he opened up education to all children & also the statistics reflecting that over 50% of Iraq's population is children, under 18! These are what Jr wants to destroy, or rather... MURDER!
I cannot & will NOT back his choices! We are brought up, taught to respect & defend this country & its Commander in Chief. For the former, I am fully committed. To the latter, I have NO respect!
I hope that some of you caught the Discovery Channel's program about the nuclear testing of Bikini Atoll, shortly after WWII. As I informed someone else recently, the current nuclear devices we have at-the-ready (at least 6,000 of them, with another 4,000 on stand-by) have as much destructive power as 1,000 times what we dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki! What this means is that just ONE of them would completely destroy the entire state of New York. Also, the level of radiation that is enough to instantly kill would cover an area of about 100 miles outside of Ground Zero (based upon the Bikini Atoll Baker test, which was detonated 90 feet below the surface of the ocean, which may be way out-dated technologically now). Put it this way, the fruit grown there is still too dangerous to eat, after more than 50 years! And we still have enough loose components to build another 10,000 MORE nuclear weapons over those which are completely assembled!
What I have written here is not secret. It's available to anyone who might be interested. To think that ANY country would be stupid enough to really want a war with us is nuts! To be fearful of another country wanting to attack us is also nuts. Are we ready to reopen those 50s bomb shelters so many families went out of their way to have installed in their backyards? I have news for you... those are totally worthless as protection against today's nukes. Guess who will be the ONLY ones in bomb shelters that realistically COULD be safe? Not you... not me... think... Our leaders. Who will they lead after such devastation anyway, if they are all that's left of humanity?
Have any of you seen the movie The Day After? As horrendous as the events in this movie appear, they are far from realistic. It plays too softly on the effects of nuclear weapons. To me, one of the stupidest mistakes made in the movie was the US nuclear missile silo guard who walks into a convenience store after the nuclear blast & takes a plastic-packaged food item from one of the displays, because he is hungry. Because of his job, he would have been trained that EVERYTHING within a hundred miles would be contaminated with toxic levels of radiation. To watch him open the bag & eat the contents shocked the shit out of me! If his exposure at the time of the blast didn't kill him, that radiation-contaminated food certainly would. And death by ingestion of radiation-contaminated food is a horribly slow, painful death.
If nuclear war comes, you'd better hope that you are at Ground Zero, or within a hundred miles of it, so you won't suffer! Me? I don't expect to be so lucky. -
Published on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 by CommonDreams.org Reckless Administration May Reap Disastrous Consequences by US Senator Robert Byrd Senate Floor Speech -
Wednesday, February 12, 2003
To contemplate war is to think about the most horrible of human experiences. On this February day, as this nation stands at the brink of battle, every American on some level must be contemplating the horrors of war. Yet, this Chamber is, for the most part, silent -- ominously, dreadfully silent. There is no debate, no discussion, no attempt to lay out for the nation the pros and cons of this particular war. There is nothing.
We stand passively mute in the United States Senate, paralyzed by our own uncertainty, seemingly stunned by the sheer turmoil of events. Only on the editorial pages of our newspapers is there much substantive discussion of the prudence or imprudence of engaging in this particular war.
And this is no small conflagration we contemplate. This is no simple attempt to defang a villain.
No. This coming battle, if it materializes, represents a turning point in U.S. foreign policy and possibly a turning point in the recent history of the world.
This nation is about to embark upon the first test of a revolutionary doctrine applied in an extraordinary way at an unfortunate time. The doctrine of preemption -- the idea that the United States or any other nation can legitimately attack a nation that is not imminently threatening but may be threatening in the future -- is a radical new twist on the traditional idea of self defense. It appears to be in contravention of international law and the UN Charter. And it is being tested at a time of world-wide terrorism, making many countries around the globe wonder if they will soon be on our -- or some other nation's -- hit list.
High level Administration figures recently refused to take nuclear weapons off of the table when discussing a possible attack against Iraq. What could be more destabilizing and unwise than this type of uncertainty, particularly in a world where globalism has tied the vital economic and security interests of many nations so closely together? There are huge cracks emerging in our time-honored alliances, and U.S. intentions are suddenly subject to damaging worldwide speculation.
Anti-Americanism based on mistrust, misinformation, suspicion, and alarming rhetoric from U.S. leaders is fracturing the once solid alliance against global terrorism which existed after September 11.
Here at home, people are warned of imminent terrorist attacks with little guidance as to when or where such attacks might occur. Family members are being called to active military duty, with no idea of the duration of their stay or what horrors they may face.
Communities are being left with less than adequate police and fire protection. Other essential services are also short-staffed. The mood of the nation is grim. The economy is stumbling. Fuel prices are rising and may soon spike higher.
This Administration, now in power for a little over two years, must be judged on its record. I believe that that record is dismal.
In that scant two years, this Administration has squandered a large projected surplus of some $5.6 trillion over the next decade and taken us to projected deficits as far as the eye can see. This Administration's domestic policy has put many of our states in dire financial condition, under funding scores of essential programs for our people. This Administration has fostered policies which have slowed economic growth. This Administration has ignored urgent matters such as the crisis in health care for our elderly. This Administration has been slow to provide adequate funding for homeland security. This Administration has been reluctant to better protect our long and porous borders.
In foreign policy, this Administration has failed to find Osama bin Laden. In fact, just yesterday we heard from him again marshaling his forces and urging them to kill. This Administration has split traditional alliances, possibly crippling, for all time, International order-keeping entities like the United Nations and NATO. This Administration has called into question the traditional worldwide perception of the United States as well-intentioned, peacekeeper. This Administration has turned the patient art of diplomacy into threats, labeling, and name calling of the sort that reflects quite poorly on the intelligence and sensitivity of our leaders, and which will have consequences for years to come.
Calling heads of state pygmies, labeling whole countries as evil, denigrating powerful European allies as irrelevant -- these types of crude insensitivities can do our great nation no good. We may have massive military might, but we cannot fight a global war on terrorism alone. We need the cooperation and friendship of our time-honored allies as well as the newer found friends whom we can attract with our wealth. Our awesome military machine will do us little good if we suffer another devastating attack on our homeland which severely damages our economy. Our military manpower is already stretched thin and we will need the augmenting support of those nations who can supply troop strength, not just sign letters cheering us on.
The war in Afghanistan has cost us $37 billion so far, yet there is evidence that terrorism may already be starting to regain its hold in that region. We have not found bin Laden, and unless we secure the peace in Afghanistan, the dark dens of terrorism may yet again flourish in that remote and devastated land.
Pakistan as well is at risk of destabilizing forces. This Administration has not finished the first war against terrorism and yet it is eager to embark on another conflict with perils much greater than those in Afghanistan. Is our attention span that short? Have we not learned that after winning the war one must always secure the peace?
And yet we hear little about the aftermath of war in Iraq. In the absence of plans, speculation abroad is rife. Will we seize Iraq's oil fields, becoming an occupying power which controls the price and supply of that nation's oil for the foreseeable future? To whom do we propose to hand the reigns of power after Saddam Hussein?
Will our war inflame the Muslim world resulting in devastating attacks on Israel? Will Israel retaliate with its own nuclear arsenal? Will the Jordanian and Saudi Arabian governments be toppled by radicals, bolstered by Iran which has much closer ties to terrorism than Iraq?
Could a disruption of the world's oil supply lead to a world-wide recession? Has our senselessly bellicose language and our callous disregard of the interests and opinions of other nations increased the global race to join the nuclear club and made proliferation an even more lucrative practice for nations which need the income?
In only the space of two short years this reckless and arrogant Administration has initiated policies which may reap disastrous consequences for years. One can understand the anger and shock of any President after the savage attacks of September 11.
One can appreciate the frustration of having only a shadow to chase and an amorphous, fleeting enemy on which it is nearly impossible to exact retribution.
But to turn one's frustration and anger into the kind of extremely destabilizing and dangerous foreign policy debacle that the world is currently witnessing is inexcusable from any Administration charged with the awesome power and responsibility of guiding the destiny of the greatest superpower on the planet.
Frankly many of the pronouncements made by this Administration are outrageous. There is no other word.
Yet this chamber is hauntingly silent. On what is possibly the eve of horrific infliction of death and destruction on the population of the nation of Iraq -- a population, I might add, of which over 50% is under age 15 -- this chamber is silent. On what is possibly only days before we send thousands of our own citizens to face unimagined horrors of chemical and biological warfare -- this chamber is silent. On the eve of what could possibly be a vicious terrorist attack in retaliation for our attack on Iraq, it is business as usual in the United States Senate.
We are truly "sleepwalking through history." In my heart of hearts I pray that this great nation and its good and trusting citizens are not in for a rudest of awakenings.
To engage in war is always to pick a wild card. And war must always be a last resort, not a first choice.
I truly must question the judgment of any President who can say that a massive unprovoked military attack on a nation which is over 50% children is "in the highest moral traditions of our country". This war is not necessary at this time. Pressure appears to be having a good result in Iraq. Our mistake was to put ourselves in a corner so quickly. Our challenge is to now find a graceful way out of a box of our own making. Perhaps there is still a way if we allow more time.
Please join me & many others in a peaceful direction of White Light on Presidents' Day, tomorrow, 17 February 2003. Let us put a stop to the war before it starts!
Incidentally, I feel like shit right now. I'm either coming down with the flu again, or suffering from drug withdrawls. Drug withdrawls? Wha...?
Yeah, I stopped taking ibuprofen a few days ago, because I noticed that even taking it, I was beginning to suffer with headaches. Ordinarily, this means taking another 400mgs. But something I recently learned caused me to pause & think. It is said (& I fully believe it, knowing that people build up a tolerance to whatever they are taking) that long-term use of anti-inflammatories (ie: ibuprofen & aspirin) may cause people to begin to experience what might be called a medication headache.
As a teen, I took high amounts of aspirin, dissolved in Coke®, because I had heard it can make a person high. I didn't notice that, but I did notice that taking them when I needed them, as for a headache, no longer worked. So I suffered through a week or so of nearly constant headaches, without my aspirin, until they finally stopped. It was months before I took another aspirin, & I took the normal dose at that time, which worked.
This may be what I need to do now for the ibuprofen. If it's affecting my headaches, in such that it is causing them, it may also be having a nasty effect on my GI system, since I had been diagnosed with Reflux problems many years ago. When I had an upper GI done, they learned that my reflux valve doesn't close completely. When I burp, it sometimes sounds like a hiccup!
I don't want to go through THAT pain again (I may have had an ulcer at one point)! That's why I don't sleep laying flat (I slept in a recliner for 3 years at one point, also for my back, & now sleep on a loveseat).
Again, please lift up your spiritual voice & energy directed toward those who believe they control our future (or lack of one) tomorrow! Blessings! -
Front Page News!
I was sitting here, taking a break from my cleaning, my computer connected to the Internet, when my Internet answering machine (CallWave...FREE!) forwarded a call that came in. It was from one of my son's friends (one I have mentioned before, who doesn't go to school). It was intended for me, since he knew my son was still in school. He said that my son's letter was on the front page of a Honolulu newspaper! Cool!
My son is part of a group who are trying to get a skate park built here in Pahoa. He has spoken at community meetings on a few occasions, which always results in compliments to me about my son. This time, he was tasked, among others, to write a letter, aimed at the State Legislature, in regard to a Bill they are supporting, which would limit government liability for accidents in government parks (state & county). This would reduce the costs of liability insurance & allow for more money for other things, like park improvements or establishing new parks, such as the desired skate park here.
My son cannot understand why they chose HIS letter to publish. I told him they apparently thought it was that good. He said, "Nah... can't be. I only wrote it in like a couple of minutes."
When he wants to, he writes very well. At least so his English teachers have told me consistently. I wonder where he gets that?
Please note that the Bill mentioned in the article encompasses more than just skate parks & county liability issues. It is also being presented to avoid the financial hardship our state has & is experiencing due to accidents to locals & tourists while participating in even such inane activities as hiking.
For example, a group, while hiking at a popular falls park on Oahu, was crushed by falling boulders. The park did display a warning sign about rock slide possibility, but many feel it was inadequate.
Personally, I feel we ALL need to take responsibility for our own clumsiness or choice of dangerous activities, rather than suing property owners/agencies for our own stupidity or clumsiness. The Sacred Falls incident was a bit different, in that it didn't involve stupidity or clumsiness on the part of the victims. Rock slides are a common hazard of sheer hillsides, & the recent rains just set the rock slide in motion at just the wrong time. -
Karmic Coincidence
This has been another one of those weird days where there are too many coincidences for the occurrences to just be chance.
As I was heading out the door to take my son to school, the phone rang. Who could be calling me at that hour (7:30)? It was the neighborhood watch person I mentioned in the past who didn't help my son when another couple kids assaulted him. He was thinking that one particular kid may have been involved, which my son said wasn't, so we clarified that issue.
We discussed a few other things, but I had to cut it short, so I could get my son to school. Not that he was anywhere near being late, since school starts for him at 8:20. He just likes to get there early & hang with his friends, playing Gameboy games, etc. To him, 7:30 is late.
As soon as I pulled into my driveway, I heard my phone ringing. I rushed inside to grab it, since I skipped setting up my computer answering machine. This call was from the VA Voc Rehab Counselor in Honolulu. She's generally in the Hilo office on Wednesdays & was calling from there. She told me my computer came in!
I had gotten a call from the computer consultant yesterday, asking about my computer order. I told him it was in her hands & I didn't expect anything on it anytime soon, since it takes 2 months (+-) to get the 3 bids needed because of its price. I called his answering machine to leave a message that my computer is here.
I thought to dress for town & head into Hilo right away, but decided that there was no real hurry. I messed around here, playing Bespelled from MSN Gaming Zone & watching a Ray Milland movie on AMC (strange that a British movie would be on AMERICAN Movie Classics!
). Once the movie ended, I dawdled, picking up a few things to carry with me then headed into Pahoa for a 7-11 drink to carry me to Hilo town.
When I pulled into the 7-11, I noticed a former co-worker talking animatedly with a few others near the pay phone, looking & sounding upset. I thought it odd that she'd be there at this time, since she still works for our subdivision in the rec center. I went inside, returning her greeting, & got my drink & pastry.
As I was getting into my car, she asked where I was heading. She said she needed a ride back to work, so I said I'd take her since I wasn't in any hurry. On the way back to the subdivision, she asked me to stop at her common-law husband's truck. She told me he had been arrested a bit earlier, for traffic warrants. He has a problem with getting his vehicles legal.
I have known them both for years. I worked with her, helping her get the healthcare benefits she was entitled to by State law, but wasn't getting because of the association board's interpretation of the law. Her husband is the one who took me into Pahoa the day I was walking (timeframe between my breast biopsy & mastectomy), so I could buy a few groceries. I was so worn out by the 2 miles I had already walked that I thought I would pass out. I had watched many other neighbors pass me by, including the board president, as if I were scum. This guy took me into town, where I wanted to go, & brought me home!
These 2 are good people at heart. They have a few kids together, who they are doing their best to raise well. She works full time, but he is unable to keep a job, mostly doing odd-jobs whenever & wherever he can. Now, she is looking at the possibility of him being incarcerated for a year & the effect that it will have on their kids (who don't yet know their dad's in jail).
I offered to take the woman to Keaau, where they have her husband in custody, since it is on the way to Hilo. We ended up being followed to her home by a few of her friends, who decided to help her out with that ride. She needed to see him & get the keys to the truck, so another friend could tow it to their home. She was very distraught when she left with them, but I assured her that there are things that can be done instead of him ending up serving time, like community service (which he's done before).
She told me he completely stopped drinking, which I had commented was the only thing I found fault with in the time that I've known him. She used to tell me about his drinking binges, where he'd disappear for a few days, taking their money with him if he could get it. That had stopped completely. Their relationship was doing very well.
She also inferred some of the more current issues with the person who took my place in that office. I'm not sure what holds her back from telling me what she knows, but she does know that I care. It seems there has been more inappropriate shuffling of association funds. Kinda like those I found while I still worked there, in the amounts of thousands of dollars. Because of these, the association cannot afford proper equipment, healthcare coverage for the employees, proper salaries, or doing the things for this community that the association was established to do.
I am sending White Light blessings to her & her husband & children. Had I not delayed in heading out to pick up my computer, & stopped at 7-11 for a drink for the trip, I'd not have run across her & been able to help her out. There's no telling how her journey would have gone, IF she managed to find another that could, or would, help. We were in the right place at the right time for her to connect up with her friends to continue the help. That's the karmic coincidence there.
As for my new computer, I have some straightening up to do, so I can put it next to the old one. I need to transfer data from the old to the new. I stopped in Pahoa to ask a computer wiz about how to do this. I suggested linking the 2 using a USB cable, which he agreed should work. It will certainly be much quicker than copying files to CD & recopying them onto the new computer. Once done, I will delete what my son doesn't need & giving the old one to him. If anyone has specifics about how I accomplish the data link & transfer, I'd appreciate any suggestions. My new computer has WinXP Pro & USB2. The old one is Win98SE, with USB1. -
Before I state my theory, I have to ask if anyone else can come up with a viable reason for what happened to me today.
I was outside, doing laundry, when the phone rang. I ran inside to answer it, thinking it might be my computer consultant (VA new computer purchase, as previously mentioned), since he called earlier with a few questions. I picked up the phone, saying "Hello?" before the fourth ring. I heard a 'beep,' said hello again, heard another couple 2 or 3 beeps, not timed the same amount apart. I said hello 3 or 4 times in all. Okaaaaayyy...?
I hung up, but long enough later to know that, had it been a FAX calling my number, it'd have disconnected before I did. I thought about the call for a few minutes, then went ahead and dialed *69 (at 75¢) to find out the number that called. I was from a local phone. I wrote the number down on the plastic container I'm currently using as a mouse pad & went back to my laundry.
About a half-hour later, I went online to do a reverse phone number look-up. No results. I even tried rearranging the last 4 digits, in case my dyslexia caused me to write them down mixed up. Still no results.
After about another half hour, I called Verizon customer service (they are our phone company now). The CSR I got was very helpful, looking up the number. He, too, came up with nothing. So, I specifically asked him about unlisted numbers. He said he would be able to find it, even unlisted. He said that number shows up as unassigned! What that means is that number should be completely unfunctional. Welllll...
I called that number after hanging up with the Verizon CSR. An electronic device answered!
Can anyone, with EXPERTISE greater than my own with telephone systems please answer me as to how this can be? As previously mentioned, I have my own theory.
I used to wire teletype & phone lines while in the Navy, as an Interior Communications Electrician. I DO know what I am dealing with in this area.

I still cannot hear very well out of my right ear. It has been just over 2 weeks & it's still plugged. I have run through the anti-biotics the local doctor gave me, been spraying Nasacort in my right nostril, as he recommended, but with very little relief.
The doctor also suggested pinching my nose & gently blowing, hopefully to move the congestion. I have been doing that too, several times a day, as well as rubbing & thumping on the area of the eustation tube behind my ear. I can feel/hear the air bubbles against my eardrum, but the congestion just won't drain away.
This is very irritating & is driving me nuts! It isn't bad enough that I have tinnitis, bad, in BOTH ears, but constantly hearing this amplified, along with my heartbeat & breathing (& swallowing!) is driving me batty!
I have been asked about my equilibrium. But with tinnitis as bad as mine is, I deal with inbalance most of the time, so this is really no different. I'm always cautious about my balance when walking & haven't noticed this problem to have aggravated it much, if any.
Any ideas how to clear my eustation tube? Short of poking a hole in the eardrum, which I've been tempted a few times to do.
