  • Karmic Coincidence

This has been another one of those weird days where there are too many coincidences for the occurrences to just be chance.

As I was heading out the door to take my son to school, the phone rang. Who could be calling me at that hour (7:30)? It was the neighborhood watch person I mentioned in the past who didn't help my son when another couple kids assaulted him. He was thinking that one particular kid may have been involved, which my son said wasn't, so we clarified that issue.

We discussed a few other things, but I had to cut it short, so I could get my son to school. Not that he was anywhere near being late, since school starts for him at 8:20. He just likes to get there early & hang with his friends, playing Gameboy games, etc. To him, 7:30 is late.

As soon as I pulled into my driveway, I heard my phone ringing. I rushed inside to grab it, since I skipped setting up my computer answering machine. This call was from the VA Voc Rehab Counselor in Honolulu. She's generally in the Hilo office on Wednesdays & was calling from there. She told me my computer came in!

I had gotten a call from the computer consultant yesterday, asking about my computer order. I told him it was in her hands & I didn't expect anything on it anytime soon, since it takes 2 months (+-) to get the 3 bids needed because of its price. I called his answering machine to leave a message that my computer is here.

I thought to dress for town & head into Hilo right away, but decided that there was no real hurry. I messed around here, playing Bespelled from MSN Gaming Zone & watching a Ray Milland movie on AMC (strange that a British movie would be on AMERICAN Movie Classics! ). Once the movie ended, I dawdled, picking up a few things to carry with me then headed into Pahoa for a 7-11 drink to carry me to Hilo town.

When I pulled into the 7-11, I noticed a former co-worker talking animatedly with a few others near the pay phone, looking & sounding upset. I thought it odd that she'd be there at this time, since she still works for our subdivision in the rec center. I went inside, returning her greeting, & got my drink & pastry.

As I was getting into my car, she asked where I was heading. She said she needed a ride back to work, so I said I'd take her since I wasn't in any hurry. On the way back to the subdivision, she asked me to stop at her common-law husband's truck. She told me he had been arrested a bit earlier, for traffic warrants. He has a problem with getting his vehicles legal.

I have known them both for years. I worked with her, helping her get the healthcare benefits she was entitled to by State law, but wasn't getting because of the association board's interpretation of the law. Her husband is the one who took me into Pahoa the day I was walking (timeframe between my breast biopsy & mastectomy), so I could buy a few groceries. I was so worn out by the 2 miles I had already walked that I thought I would pass out. I had watched many other neighbors pass me by, including the board president, as if I were scum. This guy took me into town, where I wanted to go, & brought me home!

These 2 are good people at heart. They have a few kids together, who they are doing their best to raise well. She works full time, but he is unable to keep a job, mostly doing odd-jobs whenever & wherever he can. Now, she is looking at the possibility of him being incarcerated for a year & the effect that it will have on their kids (who don't yet know their dad's in jail).

I offered to take the woman to Keaau, where they have her husband in custody, since it is on the way to Hilo. We ended up being followed to her home by a few of her friends, who decided to help her out with that ride. She needed to see him & get the keys to the truck, so another friend could tow it to their home. She was very distraught when she left with them, but I assured her that there are things that can be done instead of him ending up serving time, like community service (which he's done before).

She told me he completely stopped drinking, which I had commented was the only thing I found fault with in the time that I've known him. She used to tell me about his drinking binges, where he'd disappear for a few days, taking their money with him if he could get it. That had stopped completely. Their relationship was doing very well.

She also inferred some of the more current issues with the person who took my place in that office. I'm not sure what holds her back from telling me what she knows, but she does know that I care. It seems there has been more inappropriate shuffling of association funds. Kinda like those I found while I still worked there, in the amounts of thousands of dollars. Because of these, the association cannot afford proper equipment, healthcare coverage for the employees, proper salaries, or doing the things for this community that the association was established to do.

I am sending White Light blessings to her & her husband & children. Had I not delayed in heading out to pick up my computer, & stopped at 7-11 for a drink for the trip, I'd not have run across her & been able to help her out. There's no telling how her journey would have gone, IF she managed to find another that could, or would, help. We were in the right place at the right time for her to connect up with her friends to continue the help. That's the karmic coincidence there.

As for my new computer, I have some straightening up to do, so I can put it next to the old one. I need to transfer data from the old to the new. I stopped in Pahoa to ask a computer wiz about how to do this. I suggested linking the 2 using a USB cable, which he agreed should work. It will certainly be much quicker than copying files to CD & recopying them onto the new computer. Once done, I will delete what my son doesn't need & giving the old one to him. If anyone has specifics about how I accomplish the data link & transfer, I'd appreciate any suggestions. My new computer has WinXP Pro & USB2. The old one is Win98SE, with USB1.

  • wow...  the incident w/your son reminds me of my own fears w/my little ones.  i just hope that they don't have to deal w/physical conforntation issues.

copying your files to CD isn't such a bad idea.  it shouldn't take you that long.  re-loading all of your software programs will help us assess what is actually needed (and XP compliant).  if you have all of your critical files on CD, you'll have an external backup.  at most, you'll need half a day to migrate your data to the new system.

but if you're still insistent upon the USB cable...

  • Like the movie that always brings me to tears, Pay it Forward, I have always had this philosophy. It is always my desire to do my best in helping others. I follow the Golden Rule, in hopes that the results will be that it spreads like ripples on a lake.
